Byron Bay might be the easiest place in Australia to stand up on a surfboard. Book a lesson at Main Beach or The Pass, soft sandbanks, warm water, and waves that roll rather than dump. The Pass is the famous one: a long, peeling right-hander where longboarders trim for what feels like hundreds of metres. Wategos, tucked under the headland next door, is even mellower. When you're feeling cocky, paddle out at Tallows, the wilder beach break south of the Cape, strictly for confident surfers. And from June to November, keep one eye on the horizon: humpback whales cruise past mid-session.
Set an alarm you'll actually obey. The Cape Byron walking track is a 3.7km loop through rainforest and clifftop grassland to the most easterly point of mainland Australia, which means you're watching the first sunrise in the country. Start from The Pass around dawn, climb past Wategos Beach, and look down from the cliffs: pods of dolphins surf the swell below almost daily, turtles drift in the clear water, and in whale season the ocean puts on a full show. The white lighthouse at the top is the money shot. Free, sweaty, unbeatable. Bring water and do it before the heat kicks in.
An hour inland from Byron, the road climbs into green hills and lands in Nimbin, a rainbow-painted main street that's been Australia's counter-culture capital since the 1973 Aquarius Festival. It's weird, friendly and completely worth the drive. Make a day of it: Minyon Falls plunges 100 metres over cliffs in Nightcap National Park, Crystal Castle is exactly as strange and photogenic as it sounds, and the hinterland hides swimming holes cold enough to reset your hangover. Day tours run from Byron most mornings, so you don't need wheels. Stop in Brunswick Heads on the way back for fish and chips by the river.
Byron's evenings start on the sand. Most nights around sunset, a drum circle forms at Main Beach, dozens of drummers, fire twirlers, and half the town's backpackers watching the sky turn pink. From there it's a short wander to the pubs: the Beach Hotel, locals call it 'the Beso', has a beer garden metres from the beach, and the Railway pub squeezes live music into most nights of the week. Time your trip for the Byron markets and you'll get street food, buskers and local makers too. It's social without trying hard, turn up alone, leave with a crew.
September to November and March to May are the sweet spots, warm water, smaller crowds and cheaper hostel beds. Summer (December–February) is hot, buzzing and busy, with prices spiking around New Year. Winter is milder but far from cold, and it's peak whale season with the quietest beaches and best deals of the year.
Three to four days covers the essentials: a surf lesson, the Cape Byron lighthouse walk, a beach day and a proper night out. Add a fifth for a Nimbin and hinterland day trip. Fair warning, Byron is famous for swallowing itineraries whole. Plenty of backpackers book three nights and stay three weeks.
It's pricier than most East Coast stops, but the best of Byron is free: the lighthouse walk, the beaches, the sunset drum circle. Keep costs down by cooking in the hostel kitchen, hitting happy hours, sharing day-tour and shuttle costs with your dorm, and visiting outside December–January when bed prices jump.
Main Beach and The Pass are ideal, gentle, sand-bottomed waves that push you along rather than throw you around, with surf schools running lessons daily. Clarkes Beach, between the two, is just as friendly. Skip Tallows Beach until you're confident; it's beautiful but has strong rips and punchier waves.
From Sydney it's roughly a 9-hour drive or an overnight coach, most East Coast backpacker routes stop in Byron. From Brisbane it's about two hours by road, and Gold Coast Airport is only an hour away with regular shuttles. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is the closest, around 30 minutes from town.
It's one of the easiest places in Australia to travel alone. Hostels are social by default, surf lessons are group affairs, and the nightly drum circle at Main Beach is basically a standing invitation to make friends. Most people you meet are solo too, turning up alone in Byron is the norm, not the exception.

Dolphins are year-round locals, pods surf the waves off Wategos and The Pass most mornings. The lighthouse cliffs are your best free viewing platform.
The classic is the hinterland loop: Nimbin's rainbow-coloured main street, Minyon Falls in Nightcap National Park, and Crystal Castle, with a waterfall swim thrown in. Closer to town, Brunswick Heads and Lennox Head make easy half-days. The Gold Coast's theme parks and nightlife are only about an hour north.
