Melbourne doesn't do a big-ticket harbour. It does laneways, narrow, graffiti-soaked cuts like Hosier Lane where the street art changes weekly and the flat whites are a religion. Start in the CBD grid, duck into the Victorian-era arcades, then jump a free City Circle tram (the whole CBD is a Free Tram Zone) to the NGV, Australia's most-visited gallery, where entry to the main collection costs nothing. Queen Victoria Market feeds you cheap; in summer its night market feeds you cheaper. This is the East Coast detour worth the flight, cooler than Sydney, weirder than Brisbane, and your friends already secretly prefer it.
This is the one you came for. The Great Ocean Road hugs the Victorian coast for 240-odd kilometres, built by returned WWI soldiers, which makes it the world's largest war memorial. The payoff is the Twelve Apostles: limestone stacks rising out of the Southern Ocean about four hours' drive from Melbourne. Go at sunset if you can, the stacks glow orange and the tour buses have mostly gone. It's a long day trip (12 hours, roughly), but you'll pass surf-town Torquay, koalas dozing in the gums near Kennett River, and Loch Ard Gorge, where a shipwreck story beats anything on your phone.
Melbourne's real flex is what's parked around it. Ninety minutes east, Phillip Island runs the Penguin Parade every single night of the year, hundreds of little penguins (the world's smallest) waddling up the beach at sunset. It never gets old. An hour the other way, the Yarra Valley pours some of Australia's best pinot noir and sparkling among proper rolling-hills scenery. Our Melbourne Essentials Pack stitches all three big day trips. Two crowds, two suburbs. Fitzroy is the inked-up, op-shop, live-music side of Melbourne, Brunswick Street is a straight line of dive bars, vintage stores and $15 parma-and-pint deals, with rooftop drinks scattered through the laneways nearby. St Kilda is the beachside hostel hub: a faded seaside strip with a historic amusement park, Sunday markets on the esplanade and the cheapest beds near sand. Winter? That's footy season, grab a general-admission AFL ticket at the MCG, pick a team at random and scream with 60,000 locals. It's the fastest friendship shortcut in the country.
Melbourne works year-round, but October to April is the sweet spot, long warm days, festival season, beach weather in St Kilda and reliable conditions for the Great Ocean Road. Winter (June–August) is cold but cheap, and it's AFL season, which is an experience in itself. Pack layers whenever you come: the 'four seasons in one day' thing is real.
Give it four to five days minimum. You'll want two for the city itself, laneways, markets, galleries, Fitzroy, plus a full day each for the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island, and ideally a Yarra Valley wine day. It's an Australian city, so it's not Bali, but it's kinder than Sydney. Hostel dorms are cheapest in St Kilda, the CBD's Free Tram Zone means zero transport costs downtown, the NGV's main collection is free, and Queen Victoria Market does cheap produce and $5 lunches. Happy-hour parma-and-pint deals around Fitzroy keep dinner under $20.
The Great Ocean Road. Even people who've seen half the planet rate the Twelve Apostles at sunset. If you only have one full free day, spend it there. Second place goes to simply getting lost in the CBD laneways with a coffee, it costs almost nothing and it's the most Melbourne thing you can do.
Fly into Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), the SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station in the city in around 30–40 minutes. From Sydney it's a 90-minute flight, often cheaper than the bus; the overland option is a long 9–12 hours by coach or train. From Brisbane or Cairns, just fly. Once you're in, trams cover everything.
One of the best cities in Australia for it. The hostel scenes in St Kilda and the CBD are social by default, day tours to the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island are full of other solo backpackers, and Melburnians will talk to anyone at a bar. Plenty of working-holiday travellers base here for months, so the crew-finding is easy.
More than you'd expect from a big city. Phillip Island's Penguin Parade runs every night year-round, hundreds of little penguins coming ashore at sunset. St Kilda's breakwater hides a small wild penguin colony you can spot for free. On the Great Ocean Road, look up near Kennett River for wild koalas, and June to September brings whales along the Victorian coast.
Three headliners: the Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostles (a big 12-hour day, worth every minute), Phillip Island for the nightly Penguin Parade (about 90 minutes away), and the Yarra Valley wine region roughly an hour out. Add the Dandenong Ranges for forest walks if you've got a spare morning. All four run as easy guided day tours from the city.
