The Kandy to Ella train is the single best thing you'll do in Sri Lanka, and it costs less than a coffee back home. Six-plus hours winding through tea country, hills stitched with bright green plantations, pickers in the fields, mist rolling through the carriages. Grab a seat by the open door, legs dangling, wind in your face, and let the island slide past. Get off in Ella and it keeps going: Nine Arches Bridge at golden hour, roti shops on the main strip, and a town that runs entirely on backpacker energy. Book second or third class and just go, reserved seats sell out, unreserved is half the fun.
Sigiriya is a 200-metre column of rock rising straight out of the jungle, with the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace on top. You climb roughly 1,200 steps past ancient frescoes and the giant carved lion's paws that guard the final staircase, then stand on the summit with dry-zone jungle rolling green to every horizon. Go at opening time, the heat is real by 10am. Skint or keen for the better photo? Climb Pidurangala rock next door instead: a fraction of the ticket price, and it's the one with Sigiriya actually in your shot.
Set your alarm for stupid o'clock and roll into Udawalawe National Park as the gates open. Within minutes you're metres from wild elephants, herds with babies wading through the grass, water buffalo, crocs, peacocks strutting like they own the place. It's one of the most reliable spots in Asia to see elephants genuinely wild, no riding, no tricks, just a jeep and a lot of gawping. It slots neatly between the hill country and the south coast, so most travellers hit it on the way down to the beach. Our 12-day Sri Lanka Experience builds the sunrise safari right in.
Every Sri Lanka trip funnels south eventually, and you'll see why. Weligama's long sandy bay is the best place in the country to learn to surf, soft, forgiving waves, boards for a few dollars an hour, instructors who'll have you standing day one. Mirissa next door is the social hub: beach bars with your feet in the sand, seafood barbecues, and a headland palm grove everyone climbs for sunset. Hostels down here are full of travellers doing the exact same loop as you, so your crew basically assembles itself. The freedom of solo, the crew of a group, this coast is where that clicks.
December to April is prime for the south and west coasts, dry, sunny, and perfect for the classic Sigiriya–Ella–Mirissa loop. The east coast (Arugam Bay) flips the other way, peaking May to September. So there's genuinely no bad time; you just pick your coast. Aussie summer holidays line up beautifully with the southern season.
Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot. That covers the cultural triangle (Sigiriya), the tea country train to Ella, a national park safari, and a proper stint on the south coast beaches without sprinting. It's one of the cheapest countries you'll ever travel. Local rice and curry costs a couple of dollars, the famous Kandy–Ella train is a few dollars in second class, and dorm beds run cheap along the whole route. The big-ticket items are national park jeeps and Sigiriya's entry fee, budget for those, go local on everything else.
Ride the train from Kandy to Ella through the tea plantations, it's the experience the whole island is famous for, and it lives up to the hype. Pair it with the Sigiriya rock fortress climb and a beginner surf lesson at Weligama and you've nailed the big three without needing any prior fitness or experience.
Fly into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). SriLankan Airlines runs direct flights from Melbourne, and most east coast cities connect with one short stop via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Handy tip: the airport is actually closer to beachy Negombo than Colombo city, which is exactly why our 12-day trip starts there. Land, swim, sleep.
One of the best. The backpacker route is well-worn, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, the south coast, so you keep bumping into the same faces, and hostels in Ella and Mirissa are naturally social. Loads, and most of it genuinely wild. Elephants at Udawalawe year-round (and the huge dry-season Gathering at Minneriya around July–October), leopards in Yala, and blue whales off Mirissa between November and April. Add monkeys at every temple and peacocks everywhere. Skip anything offering elephant rides, the sunrise jeep safari is the ethical way to do it.
From Ella: walk to Nine Arches Bridge for a train photo, climb Little Adam's Peak for sunrise, or hike Ella Rock. From the south coast: wander the Dutch-era ramparts of Galle Fort, jeep into Udawalawe for elephants, or head out from Mirissa on a whale-watching boat in season. All cheap, all half-day doable.
