Perth to Wave Rock We leave Perth early and head southeast into the Wheatbelt, watching the city slowly give way to farmland, country towns and wide open landscapes. Our first stop is Wellington Dam, home to the world’s largest dam mural. Painted directly onto the dam wall, the artwork blends local stories, culture and nature on a massive scale, surrounded by the forested scenery of Wellington National Park. From here, we continue to Collie, where there is time to grab lunch and wander through parts of the town’s mural trail. More than forty large scale artworks are spread throughout the streets, giving the town a completely different feel from most country stops along the way. By late afternoon, we arrive at Wave Rock, one of Western Australia’s most recognisable natural landmarks. Standing beneath the giant curved granite formation, it is easy to see why people make the trip out here just to experience it in person. “ One of those places that looks even bigger and stranger in real life.” Tonight, we settle into camp nearby, share dinner together and roll out our swags beneath the stars for the first night of the trip. Wave Rock to Cape Le Grand National Park This morning starts with the Wave Rock Circuit Walk, taking us beyond the famous granite wave itself and through the surrounding landscape of rock formations, salt lakes and native bushland. As we continue east, the scenery slowly shifts from dry inland country towards the coast. We stop in Ravensthorpe to check out the town’s colourful silo art before continuing on to Esperance. There is time to explore town, grab supplies and enjoy the first proper glimpse of the Southern Ocean before we make our way into Cape Le Grand National Park. By late afternoon, we arrive at Lucky Bay and set up camp right near the beach. White sand, clear turquoise water and kangaroos wandering along the shoreline make it one of the most memorable places we stay during the trip. “ The kind of beach people usually expect to see only on postcards.” The evening is yours to swim, explore the coastline or simply settle in and enjoy being here. Cape Le Grand National Park We wake up in Cape Le Grand with the beach only a short walk from camp, and if we are lucky, we may spot kangaroos wandering along the coastline. For those keen to get moving early, the climb up Frenchman Peak offers sweeping views across the national park and out towards the islands of the Recherche Archipelago. It is a steady climb, but the view from the top makes the effort worthwhile. The rest of the day is all about enjoying Cape Le Grand properly. Some people spend the afternoon swimming in the bays, others head off on walking trails or simply find a quiet stretch of sand and stay there for hours. With very little driving today, there is finally time to slow the pace down and settle into the coastline. “ A full day in Cape Le Grand is exactly why this trip stands out.” Tonight, we return to camp for another relaxed evening at Lucky Bay. Cape Le Grand to the Nullarbor Plain We leave the coast behind this morning and begin the journey across the vast Nullarbor Plain. After a stop in Norseman, we hit the famous 90 Mile Straight, the longest straight stretch of road in Australia. Out here, the road itself becomes part of the experience, with huge skies, endless horizons and long stretches where it feels like there is almost nothing else around. Throughout the drive, our Storyteller Guide shares stories about the region, from early explorers to life in remote Australia today. By evening, we arrive at our remote bush camp on the Nullarbor. Great Australian Bight to Penong Today we continue west across the Nullarbor, stopping along the way at some of the region’s most iconic roadside landmarks. We pull over for the famous wildlife crossing sign before reaching the dramatic Bunda Cliffs, where the flat outback suddenly drops into the Southern Ocean below. Stretching for more than 200 kilometres, the cliffs are one of the most powerful coastal landscapes in Australia. “ Standing at the edge of the Bunda Cliffs really puts the scale of this country into perspective.” As the day continues, we cross the Dingo Fence and travel through Yalata Aboriginal lands before eventually arriving in the small outback town of Penong. Known for its giant windmill display and laid back atmosphere, Penong feels like a classic stop on an Australian road trip. Tonight, there is the option to head to the local pub for dinner before settling into camp. Penong to Coodlie Park We start the morning in Penong with a stop at the local windmill museum, home to the giant windmill known as Bruce and a collection that reflects the region’s farming history and outback character. From here, we continue towards the coast for a two hour surf lesson with the team at Streaky Bay Surf School. Whether it is your first time standing on a board or you are already comfortable in the water, the beaches here make an incredible place to surf. Long stretches of coastline, clear water and very few crowds make the whole experience feel relaxed from the start. “ Learning to surf on an empty beach in remote South Australia is hard to beat.” After some free time to grab lunch in town, we continue south along the Eyre Peninsula coastline towards tonight’s camp. By late afternoon, we arrive at Coodlie Park Farm Retreat. With outdoor swag huts, resident animals and wide open skies, this place quickly becomes a favourite stop for a lot of travellers. Tonight, we settle in around the campfire for dinner before those interested can join the optional stargazing experience beneath some of the darkest skies in Australia. Coodlie Park to Camp Nyroca We start early this morning for one of the biggest highlights of the trip, the optional Baird Bay sea lion and dolphin swim. Heading out by boat into sheltered waters, we spend time swimming alongside wild Australian sea lions and bottlenose dolphins in their natural environment. The sea lions are playful and curious, often darting around the group underwater while dolphins move through the bay nearby. There is nothing staged about the experience, which is exactly what makes it so memorable. “ Usually the moment people talk about most once the trip is over.” For those not joining the swim, the morning is spent relaxing around Baird Bay and enjoying the coastline before regrouping later in the day. Lunch is included today before we continue south along the Eyre Peninsula, passing remote beaches, rugged cliffs and quiet coastal towns that most travellers never get to see. By evening, we arrive at Camp Nyroca, surrounded by bushland and birdlife. After a big day on the coast, tonight is all about slowing things down around camp with dinner and a relaxed evening under the stars. Coffin Bay to Port Lincoln This morning, we head into Coffin Bay National Park, known for its bright white beaches, rugged coastline and calm turquoise bays. For those keen to try something local, there is the option to join the Coffin Bay Oyster Farm Tour, where we step into the water and taste oysters fresh from the lease itself while learning about the region’s oyster industry firsthand. If oysters are not your thing, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace with the Oyster Walk, a relaxed coastal trail with views across the bay, native bushland and quiet beaches along the way. From here, we continue to Port Lincoln for lunch at the famous Fresh Fish Place, known for some of the freshest seafood on the Eyre Peninsula. Later in the afternoon, we make our way to Fishery Bay, a quieter stretch of coastline just outside Port Lincoln with rocky headlands, clear water and wide ocean views. It is an easy place to slow down and take in the coastline without the crowds. Not far from here, we spend time searching for koalas in their natural habitat among the local gum trees. Spotting them resting quietly in the wild always feels a bit special, especially this far south in Australia. “ Seeing koalas in the wild always feels very different from seeing them in a zoo.” To finish the day, we join proud Barngarla woman Emmalene Richards for a cultural experience sharing stories of Country, culture and connection to the land and sea. Port Lincoln to Mt Remarkable National Park This morning begins with a hands on conservation experience in the Port Lincoln region. Depending on weather and local conditions, the location and activities may vary, but the focus remains the same, supporting the protection and care of the local environment alongside community led conservation efforts. “ A chance to give something back to the places we have travelled through.” From here, we continue across the Eyre Peninsula, stopping in small country towns along the way, including Tumby Bay and Cowell, both known for their colourful silo art and strong connection to the local farming and fishing communities. After lunch, we make our way towards Mount Remarkable National Park in the Southern Flinders Ranges for our final night on the road together. Once camp is set up, there is time to relax before dinner and one last evening beneath the stars with the group. Mt Remarkable National Park to Adelaide Our final morning starts with one last walk through Mount Remarkable National Park, where rugged sandstone ridges, ancient river red gums and native wildlife give us a final taste of life outdoors before heading back towards the city. From here, we travel south through the Clare Valley, one of South Australia’s best known wine regions. There is time to stop for lunch before enjoying a final group wine tasting together.
