Overview

Ask anyone coming down the coast what actually mattered and you'll hear the same two answers: K'gari and the Whitsundays. This bundle stitches them together, three days sharing the wheel of a 4WD on the world's largest sand island, beach-camping under serious star fields, then three days under sail among 74 islands, sleeping on deck and snorkelling coral gardens, with the Rainbow Beach-to-Airlie transfer and the beds between pre-booked. Guides run both adventures; everything around them runs on your clock. It's built to bolt on: open-dated and valid 12 months, so it slots into whatever the rest of your plan looks like, bus pass, campervan, cheap flights. Run the two tours back-to-back or split them apart. Our concierge locks in every date, and your crew is trading intros on WhatsApp before you get there. Two of the biggest ticks in Australia, one booking, zero logistics homework.

Itinerary at a glance

QUEENSLAND NEW SOUTH WALES Great Barrier Reef K'gari Days 1–3 Rainbow Beach Day 4 Whitsundays Days 4–6
Your route, day by day
  1. Stop 1

K'gari (Fraser Island), 4WD convoy across an island made of sand (days 1–3)

Roll out of Rainbow Beach, onto the barge, and onto an island built entirely of sand. For three days you and your crew share the driving of a 4WD in convoy, guide up front on the radio calling the lines, with 75-Mile Beach as your highway. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float down crystal-clear Eli Creek, clamber over the rusting SS Maheno wreck, fizz in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights: beach camp, fire, a proper feed, ridiculous stars. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag.

  2. Stop 2

Transfer north, Rainbow Beach to the Whitsundays' front door (day 4)

Shake K'gari out of your shoes, you'll be finding it for weeks, and ride north, transfer and tonight's bed both already booked. Airlie Beach is the Whitsundays' front door and it knows it: cool off in the famous lagoon, walk the marina at golden hour, stock up on reef-safe sunscreen and find your boat crew over a schooner on the main street. Or bank an early night instead, the boat leaves in the morning, and the next three days are the ones you'll talk about most.

  3. Stop 3

Whitsundays, deck naps, coral gardens & squeaky sand (days 5–6)

Step aboard and let the crew handle the ropes while you handle the horizon. Snorkel Hook Island's coral gardens over turtles and parrotfish, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout as the tide swirls turquoise sand through the shallows like slow smoke, and walk barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica that squeaks with every step. Sleep on deck under a sky with barely any light pollution, wake to sunrise over the Coral Sea, and sail back into Airlie with the coast's two biggest ticks done and dusted.

Common questions about this trip

  • What does semi-guided actually mean?

Both headline adventures, the K'gari 4WD safari and the Whitsundays sail, run with professional guides and a group. The bits between are yours: the transfer and beds are pre-booked, but you choose your dates and can split the two tours apart if you'd rather not run them back-to-back.
  • Who is this trip for?

Backpackers and independent travellers 18+, mostly 20s. It's ideal if you're already doing the coast under your own steam, bus pass, campervan or flights, and want the two big-ticket adventures locked in without the logistics.
  • How big is the group?

Each adventure runs with its own small group, up to around 30 on the K'gari convoy and up to around 20 on the sail, plus the Wanderlust WhatsApp crew before you go.
  • Is it open-dated? How long is it valid?

Yes, open-dated and valid for 12 months from purchase. Lock in dates whenever your coast plan firms up, and our concierge books everything for you.
  • What's the accommodation like?

Two nights beach camping on K'gari (tents, mats and cooking gear provided), two nights aboard your Whitsundays boat, and hostel nights in Rainbow Beach and Airlie Beach between. Boat upgrades and private hostel rooms are sometimes available, ask us.
  • Do I actually drive on K'gari?

Yes, if you want to, it's a tag-along safari where you and your crew share the 4WD driving in convoy behind a lead guide. You'll need a full driver's licence to drive; non-drivers ride along and swim just as hard.
  • How much spending money should I budget?

Around $50–70 a day for meals off the tour days, drinks and extras. Most meals on both adventures are included, so this combo is one of the cheaper weeks you'll have on the coast.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Date changes within your 12-month validity are free. Cancellations follow each operator's terms, which we pass through as-is and confirm with you before you pay. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 and we chase it on your behalf; if the operator cancels, you're fully refunded.
