1. Stop 1

   Brisbane, land and find your feet (days 1–2)

   Start where the Queensland run begins. Two nights in Brisbane to shake off the flight: swim and graze your way round South Bank, ride the CityCat down the river, chase a rooftop sunset, and if the legs are willing, day-trip to Australia Zoo or snorkel Moreton Island. Collect your bus pass and itinerary pack, say g'day to your WhatsApp crew, and the coast north is already booked and sequenced ahead of you, nothing to plan, nothing to clash.

2. Stop 2

   Noosa, surf school on the coast's mellowest break (days 3–4)

   A short hop north to Noosa, all boutique beach town and national-park headlands. Stand up on your first wave with a local school on Main Beach's forgiving point break, one of the friendliest learner set-ups on the coast, then walk the Noosa National Park coastal track past dozing koalas to the point breaks at Tea Tree Bay and swim off the calm main beach. Two easy nights to bank some water confidence before the sand island.

3. Stop 3

   K'gari (Fraser Island), three days of sand-highway 4WDing (days 5–7)

   First showstopper. K'gari is the world's largest sand island and you'll drive it yourself, tag-along style, sharing the wheel of a 4WD in convoy while a lead guide calls the lines over the radio. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float down Eli Creek's glass-clear current, scramble over the rusted SS Maheno wreck, fizz about in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping: campfire, a proper feed, and 75-Mile Beach as tomorrow's highway. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag, then just drive and swim.

4. Stop 4

   Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays, two nights under sail through 74 islands (days 8–11)

   Bus north to Airlie Beach and step aboard for the sail everyone raves about: three days and two nights threading the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Snorkel Hook Island's coral gardens, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand into shapes that look edited, and go barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica sand that genuinely squeaks. A night in Airlie either side buys you the lagoon, the marina at sunset and a proper send-off with your boat crew. Salt in your hair for days. Worth it.

5. Stop 5

   Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef, the big tick to finish (days 12–14)

   End on the biggest name in the water. A full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef puts you over turtles, rays, giant clams and coral in colours you'll struggle to describe afterwards, one of the seven natural wonders, ticked, snorkel in hand. Your spare day is wide open: the Cairns Esplanade lagoon and night markets, a waterfall run to the Atherton Tablelands, or a Daintree day trip if you're still hungry. Toast a fortnight with no dead days, or start here and run the whole thing in reverse.

• What does semi-guided actually mean?

  Every big-ticket adventure, the K'gari 4WD safari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef day, your surf lesson, runs with professional guides and a group. Everything in between is unguided: we pre-book the beds and bus pass and sequence the whole route, so nothing clashes and there's nothing to plan — you just explore each stop your own way.

• Who is this trip for?

  Backpackers and independent travellers aged 18+, with most people in their 20s. It suits solo travellers especially well, the guided days and the WhatsApp group mean you're never actually travelling alone.

• How big is the group?

  There's no fixed tour group. Each guided adventure runs with its own small group (up to around 30 people), and the WhatsApp crew connects you with other Wanderlust travellers on the same route.

• Is it open-dated? How long is the pass valid?

  Yes, you buy now and lock in travel dates whenever you like. Everything is valid for 12 months from purchase, and our concierge handles all the date-setting for you.

• What's the accommodation like?

  Well-reviewed hostel dorms in the best backpacker areas of each stop, plus two nights beach camping on K'gari and two nights aboard your Whitsundays boat. Private-room upgrades are usually available, just ask the concierge.

• Do I actually drive on K'gari?

  Yes, if you want to. It's a tag-along safari: you and your crew share the driving of a 4WD in convoy, with a lead guide on the radio showing the way. You'll need a full driver's licence to take a turn at the wheel, non-drivers are welcome too.

• How much spending money should I budget?

  Roughly $50–70 a day covers food off the guided days, drinks and the odd extra. Add more if you're planning big-ticket add-ons like a skydive or extra dives.

• What's the cancellation policy?

  Date changes within your 12-month validity are free, that's the whole point of open-dated. Cancellations follow each operator's terms, which we pass through as-is and confirm with you before you pay.
