Itinerary at a glance

1. Stop 1

   Sydney, kick off the coast (days 1–2)

   Start wherever suits, Sydney or Cairns, but the classic run opens in Sydney. Two days to land properly: ferry to Manly, walk the Bondi-to-Coogee cliff track, watch the Opera House glow at dusk and grab your bus pass and itinerary pack. Your first hostel is booked and waiting, your crew is already chatting in the WhatsApp group, and the East Coast is queued up in front of you. When you're ready, point north.

2. Stop 2

   Byron Bay, surf, lighthouse and sunsets (days 3–5)

   Byron is where the trip finds its rhythm. Learn to surf with a local school on the town's forgiving beach breaks, walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse at mainland Australia's most easterly point for sunrise, and give your afternoons to the markets, beach bars and drum-circle sunsets. Whales cruise past on migration June–November, and a dolphin sea-kayak out through the Cape Byron Marine Park is there as an optional add-on if you want it. Three nights, enough to find the town's pace before the coast pulls you north.

3. Stop 3

   Surfers Paradise, high-rises on the sand (day 6)

   A quick hop up to the Gold Coast for a night of contrast: Surfers Paradise stacks high-rises right onto a wide surf beach, with a strip that doesn't blink till sunrise. Swim between the flags, ride the tower lifts for the view, and if theme parks are your thing, Movie World, Dreamworld and Wet'n'Wild are all a short trip inland. One night, then back on the coast road to Noosa.

4. Stop 4

   Noosa, canoe the river of mirrors (days 7–8)

   Noosa is the coast at its most effortlessly beautiful. Canoe the Everglades, one of only two everglade systems on the planet, through water so still the paperbarks mirror back at you. Walk the Noosa National Park coastal track past koalas and hidden coves to the point breaks at Tea Tree Bay, then swim off the calm main beach and browse Hastings Street. A polished, mellow interlude before things get sandy.

5. Stop 5

   K'gari (Fraser Island), drive the world's biggest sand island (days 9–11)

   The first showstopper: three days on K'gari, the world's largest sand island, driving a 4WD in convoy with a guide up front showing you the lines. Swim the impossibly blue Lake McKenzie, float down crystal-clear Eli Creek, clamber over the rusting SS Maheno shipwreck, soak in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping, campfire, proper feed, star fields, the odd dingo patrol, with 75-Mile Beach as your highway. Meals and camping gear sorted (bring or hire a sleeping bag); you drive and swim.

6. Stop 6

   Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays, sail the 74 islands (days 12–15)

   Airlie Beach launches the sail everyone talks about afterwards. Three days and two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands: snorkel Hook Island's coral gardens, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand into living art, and go barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica sand that squeaks underfoot. Nights either side in Airlie bring the lagoon, marina bars and beach-club energy. The postcard bit of the coast, fully earned.

7. Stop 7

   Magnetic Island, Barbie cars & wild koalas (days 16–17)

   A short ferry from Townsville, 'Maggie' is the island where the pace drops and the wildlife turns up. Hire an open-top Barbie car and loop the island's 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef at Geoffrey Bay, and walk the Forts Walk at golden hour, one of the best places in the country to spot wild koalas dozing in the gums. Granite boulders, quiet beaches, big sunsets. Two nights of island time before the adrenaline spikes.

8. Stop 8

   Mission Beach, where the rainforest meets the reef (day 18)

   A palm-fringed beach town where cassowary-dotted rainforest runs down to the Coral Sea, a mellow stop to break the run north. It's also the launch point for Australia's most scenic skydive: a 15,000ft tandem jump over reef and rainforest is the region's signature add-on if you're game, or skip it and give the day to the beaches and rainforest walks. Mission Beach earns its place either way.

9. Stop 9

   Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef, the grand finale (days 19–21)

   Finish where the jungle meets the sea. Spend a full day on the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling or diving the outer reef among turtles, rays, giant clams and technicolour coral, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Your spare days are wide open: an optional guided day up to the Atherton Tablelands for waterfalls and the Millaa Millaa swimming holes, a Daintree day trip, or just the Esplanade lagoon and night markets. Toast three weeks of coast with your crew, or start here and run the whole thing in reverse.

• What does semi-guided actually mean?

  Every big adventure, the K'gari safari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef day, the Everglades, your surf lesson, runs with professional guides and a group. Everything between is unguided: beds and transport are pre-booked and the whole route is sequenced for you, so nothing clashes and there's nothing to plan — you just explore each stop your own way.

• Who is this trip for?

  Independent travellers and backpackers 18+, mostly 20s. It's built for solo travellers, between the guided days and the WhatsApp crew you'll have mates by day two, but couples and small crews love it too.

• How big is the group?

  There's no single tour bus to be tied to. Each guided adventure runs with its own small group (up to around 30 people), and the WhatsApp group links you with other Wanderlust travellers on the same stretch of coast.

• Is it open-dated? How long is the pass valid?

  Yes, everything is open-dated and valid for 12 months from purchase. Lock in your dates whenever you're ready and our concierge sets every reservation for you.

• What's the accommodation like?

  Well-rated hostel dorms in the best backpacker areas, two nights beach camping on K'gari and two nights aboard your Whitsundays boat. Want a private room? Upgrades are usually available, ask the concierge.

• Do I actually drive on K'gari?

  Yes, it's a tag-along safari, so you and your crew share the 4WD driving in convoy behind a lead guide who calls the lines. A full driver's licence is required to drive; you can ride shotgun the whole way if you'd rather.

• How much spending money should I budget?

  Roughly $50–70 a day for food off the guided days, drinks and extras. Add-ons like the Mission Beach skydive, a Heart Reef flight or extra dives sit on top, budget for whichever you fancy.

• What's the cancellation policy?

  Date changes inside your 12-month validity are free, that's the point of open-dated.
