Overview

Uluru changes colour at dusk, everyone knows that. What fewer people see is the whole show at once: Uluru glowing on one side, Kata Tjuta's domes catching fire on the other, and the desert running red to the horizon between them. For that view, you need altitude. This 36-minute flight departs the Town Square Helipad at Ayers Rock Resort and flies wide, steady loops around both landmarks at the closest distance regulations allow, never directly over them, in line with Anangu cultural protocols, which is exactly as it should be. Your pilot narrates through the headsets, with photography tips for getting the light right, and there's a photo op with the helicopter before or after. It's a maximum of six passengers, it's PHS's own 'Pilot Choice' flight, and it turns the Red Centre's daily sunset ritual into the version nobody else at the resort got.

"Helicopters are the best way to experience the size and grandeur of outback sites. Whilst expensive you can't match the perspective they give you or the scale of the attractions. We took the hour flight that included the amazing Lake Amadeus, a massive salt lake that is awe inspiring in its size and colour."

"Seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta from the air was so worthwhile! Being able to see these sites in the context of a vast desert was awe inspiring. Very different to seeing them up close. I was able to get great photos through the large glass windows."
