South Australia keeps two of its best assets an easy drive apart, and this tour refuses to choose between them: Hahndorf, the historic German village of stone cottages and smallgoods, and the Barossa Valley, where some of the world's greatest shiraz grows on some of its oldest vines. The day opens with Hahndorf's main street, browse, snack, photograph the storybook architecture, then rolls into the valley proper for wine tastings at four Barossa wineries, threading through Lyndoch, Tanunda and Nuriootpa with a lunch of regional Barossa flavours in the middle. The Whispering Wall (a dam with acoustics that carry a whisper 140 metres) and Mengler Hill Lookout are available as stops along the way. It's a small group capped at 13, with hotel pickup from Adelaide CBD or Glenelg, complimentary water, a free gift, and, the crucial inclusion on any wine day, a professional designated driver.
