Overview

The Flinders Ranges are 600 million years old, mountains so ancient they hold Ediacaran fossils, the earliest complex life on Earth, just sitting in the gorge walls. This three-day small-group 4WD safari reads that deep history like a guided book, with an expert at the wheel and your own motel room each night. From Adelaide the route runs through historic coastal towns and the Clare Valley wine country into the ranges proper: Pichi Richi Pass and the heritage township of Quorn, Warren Gorge, home of the rare and photogenic Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby, then the Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges with their fossil-bearing walls, and the enormous outback panorama from Razorback Lookout. Kangaroos, emus and wedge-tailed eagles are daily company, and Aboriginal artworks and settlement history layer in the human story. Two nights at Wilpena Pound Resort anchor the trip (optional scenic flights over the Pound available), with continental breakfasts and picnic lunches included. Small group, single room, colossal landscape.

"It was fabulous. The scenery is amazing and everything was so well organised, it made the trip super easy and comfortable. Staying at Ikara Wilpena Pound was magic - beautiful place and comfortable accommodation. … Highlights were the day travelling through Brachina Gorge and seeing yellow-footed rock wallabies, the flight over Kati Thanda Lake Eyre, and the incredible scenery in our outback region."

"The Flinders Ranges make for a terrific destination to visit from Adelaide. You get stunning scenery, old mining towns as well as interesting wildlife and plants. … My highlight was probably the 2-hr roundtrip hike up to the rim of Wilpena Pound with stunning views at the end. The kangaroos grazing outside my tent in the morning was a close second."
