Overview

The Top End does its best work early. At 7:00am the heat hasn't landed yet, mist is still lifting off the water, and Nitmiluk Gorge belongs to the people who set an alarm. This is the cruise the sleep-ins never see. Over two hours you travel through the first two gorges of Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, with your guide narrating as the sandstone walls catch first light and the wildlife starts its day. The route crosses between gorge sections, so expect short walks between boats over rocky terrain, part of the adventure, not a footnote. Drinking water and toilets are onboard. You'll need a Nitmiluk National Park pass (sorted separately; NT residents exempt) and your own transport to the gorge. Go before breakfast, be back before the day gets hot, and spend the rest of it smug.

"The scenery was spectacular and we spotted several freshwater crocodiles by the banks which added some excitement. Apparently they like to be out around our 10am tour time, warming themselves up."
