Cutta Cutta means 'place of many stars' in the local Jawoyn language, and it's not poetic licence, the cave walls glitter with quartz crystals, 15 metres below the Top End's baked surface. It's a strange, sparkling world down there, and the hour-long guided tour is the only way in. Your guide walks you through a limestone system millions of years in the making, home to five bat species including the rare Ghost and Horseshoe bats. Back on the surface, the park has recorded around 170 bird species, Hooded Parrots and endangered Gouldian Finches among them, plus a Tropical Woodland walk, visitor centre and kiosk. It's 27km south of Katherine and you'll need your own wheels, so it slots perfectly into a Top End road trip. One catch: the caves are seasonal, open May to October, so time your run.
