There's a moment on this trip nobody is ready for: the guide falls quiet, the boat slides into pitch darkness, and the ceiling switches on. Thousands of native glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa, burning blue-green above your head like someone spilled a galaxy. First you walk the limestone chambers, including the Cathedral, the tallest in the cave. Then it's onto the boat for the Glowworm Grotto: no engine, no talking, your guide pulling you through by hand, because the glowworms are sensitive to light and noise. The silence is half the magic. It's 45 minutes, it suits every age, and it's run by Discover Waitomo, the cave's official kaitiaki. Pair it with Black Labyrinth or Black Abyss if you want your Waitomo day to end with an adrenaline spike.
