Overview

Te Pā Tū (formerly Tamaki Māori Village) is New Zealand's most awarded cultural attraction and a TripAdvisor Top 10 in the World, and it earns those titles by refusing to be a dinner show. This is three and a half hours inside a forest pā, structured around genuine tikanga and reprogrammed each season to the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar. The summer edition (Tū Te Rā, November to April) unfolds in movements: the Ahi Tuku welcome fire ceremony as you enter, seasonal appetisers with kawakawa tea and broth, then the fireside wānanga, storytelling, history, games and traditional instruments, shared conversationally rather than performed at you. The kapa haka performance brings the power; the hangi-cooked Māori fusion feast brings everything else; and the Poroporoaki farewell ceremony closes the circle. Return coach transfers from central Rotorua are complimentary, and the whole evening carries Qualmark Gold accreditation. Of everything you do in Rotorua, this is the one that stays with people.
