Remote K'gari (Fraser Island) & Whale Experience

Tasman Venture is the only operator on K'gari's remote western coast: kayak mangrove creeks, snorkel, ride tubes, then cruise Platypus Bay for breaching humpbacks, with in-water whale swims when conditions allow.

Overview

Everyone does K'gari's east side, Lake McKenzie, the Maheno, the convoys. This trip goes the other way. Tasman Venture is the only operator running the island's remote western coastline, which means Wathumba, Awinya or Bowarrady Creek with nobody else's footprints in the sand. The day splits into two acts. First, the wild west: kayaking through mangrove creeks, snorkelling turquoise shallows, tubing, and sand-dune hiking with guided walks and crew commentary throughout. Then Platypus Bay, where Hervey Bay's calm water makes it one of Australia's great humpback theatres, breaches, tail slaps and spy hops, watched from a viewing deck that lowers you close to the action. When conditions allow (July–August is prime), there's the chance of an in-water swim with the whales themselves. No guarantees, they're whales, but when it happens, it's a life moment. Hotel pickup from select Hervey Bay stays, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea and all equipment included. There's even a licensed bar aboard for the cruise home.

"We were lucky enough to see humpback whales, which was a real highlight. Kayaking down a freshwater creek was peaceful and serene, while the tube ride added plenty of excitement and fun. We also climbed to the top of a steep sand dune and were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views along the coast. To top it all off, we enjoyed a swim in a beautiful freshwater pool at the end of the day."
