Overview

Most trips make you choose between fast and slow. The Funyaks day refuses: first a jet boat hammers you deep into Mount Aspiring National Park, UNESCO World Heritage, straight out of Glenorchy, then you swap the engine for a paddle and float back down the Dart in an inflatable Funyak, taking the valley at river pace. The float is the sleeper hit. Your guides lead you into hidden side-streams and the narrow blue walls of the Rockburn chasm, places the jet boats can't go, past country that stood in for Middle-earth and mutant school grounds alike (Lord of the Rings and X-Men both filmed here). Then it's a gourmet picnic lunch in native beech forest. Queenstown return transport, wetsuits, fleeces, spray jackets, booties, life jackets and dry bags are all included. Six and a half hours, two speeds, zero regrets.

"What a great day out. First up was the jetboat ride and it was fantastic, lots of spins too. We canoed for a while and stopped for a lovely lunch at Rockburn Chasm and what a surprise that was. The water is crystal clear and so blue, it was stunning."
