Getting to K'gari from Brisbane is usually a multi-day production. This tour compresses it into one heroic, well-engineered day, and makes the journey half the show, running up through the Glass House Mountains and along the surf beach at Double Island Point before you've even reached the ferry. On the island, the 4WD earns its keep: cruising the 75 Mile Beach highway with dingoes, kangaroos and seasonal whales all possible sightings, splashing through up to eight freshwater creek crossings, and delivering you to the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk at Central Station, a walk through the only place on Earth where tall rainforest grows straight out of sand. The finale is the one everybody's waiting for: a swim at Lake McKenzie, whose white silica sand and clear water sit near the top of most Australian trip lists. Ferries, park fees, a picnic lunch by the lake or rainforest, cold drinks and fresh fruit are all included. One long day, one very large tick.
