Overview

Some 4WDs blend in. Fraser Dingo's do not, you cross K'gari in a convoy of unapologetically PINK Toyota Prados, taking turns at the wheel behind an experienced lead guide. Two days of sand driving, and every photo instantly recognisable. The route hits the island's icons: 75 Mile Beach under your own tyres, a swim (or tube ride) at Eli Creek, the Maheno shipwreck, the rainforest walk at Pile Valley and Central Station, and the freshwater showstoppers of Lake McKenzie or Lake Birrabeen. Nights beat camping comfortably: a beach house with quad-share rooms, hot showers, a communal deck and a BBQ kitchen, with all meals and snacks included. Drivers get a full 4WD safety briefing, hostel pickups run free from Flashpackers, Woolshed and YHA in Hervey Bay, and solo travellers get slotted into a like-minded crew, this trip has built friend groups for years. Ferries, permits and local charges are all covered.
