Most reef boats are transport. Evolution is a 35-metre, three-deck superyacht with air-conditioned lounges and full-length sundecks, so the ride out to the outer Great Barrier Reef is part of the day, not the price of admission. You get five hours across two outer reef locations, which is serious water time. Snorkel equipment, floatation devices and lycra suits are all provided free, and if you want to go deeper there are up to three introductory or certified scuba dives with professional instructors. Lunch is a BBQ cooked onboard, fresh fish, prawns, steak and salads, with dietary requirements catered for if you let reservations know. Arrival tea, coffee and mini muffins start the day; a glass of wine with cheese and biscuits closes it as you cruise back to Cairns. Eight hours, properly done.
