The trip starts with you leaning backwards over a 35-metre hole in the ground, rope in hand. If that sentence made your palms sweat, good, Black Abyss is Waitomo's flagship adventure, built for natural-born adrenaline junkies. After abseil training, you drop into the cave system and it keeps escalating: a flying fox, blackwater tubing on the underground river, jumps into dark water, climbing, waterfalls, and glowworms scattered overhead the whole way through, like the cave is showing off. It's five hours underground, ages 16 and up. Come with mates or come solo; either way you'll surface with a story that beats whatever everyone else did in Waitomo that day. Want the sampler first?
