Overview

Awaroa sits deep in Abel Tasman National Park, far enough in that most day-trippers never reach it, which is precisely its charm. This cruise runs you there from Kaiteriteri at 9:00am, past Split Apple Rock and a New Zealand fur seal colony, with commentary on the park's ecosystem filling in the story along the way. You land around 10:30am and the day becomes yours. The lazy version: golden sand, swimming, and lunch at Awaroa Lodge and Cafe (open October to April). The active version: the comfortable 1 hour 45 minute walk to Tonga Quarry, one of the park's prettiest stretches, before your afternoon pickup, choose the 1:00pm boat (mid-October to April) or the 2:45pm year-round. It's an eight-hour day that flexes to your energy level, and it's family-friendly too, under-15s are discounted and under-5s cruise free. Abel Tasman with the effort dialled to taste.

"We did the morning scenic cruise, beautiful surroundings, and a few fur seals to be found. Were dropped off on what felt like our very own deserted beach for a couple of hours, with the option of a couple of walks, or just taking in the sun."

"We went to Totaranui and return. The highlight was seeing a Pod of Dolphins. The commentary both was really good on both journeys."
