Overview

The Abel Tasman Coast Track is a multi-day walk, but nobody said the days had to be consecutive, or end in a tent. The 3 Day Passport splits the park into three separate day trips: sea shuttles drop you at a different point each morning, you walk a new section of golden coastline, and you're back at your own accommodation by evening. A classic version runs Totaranui to Tonga Quarry, Tonga Quarry to Anchorage, then Anchorage to Apple Tree Bay, which knocks off most of the full walkway with beaches to swim at along the way. Pickups are flexible and tide-smart, with multiple departure points, and free bus transfers run from Motueka for the 9:00am sailings (Nelson transfers cost extra). Snacks and drinks are sold on every boat. It's self-paced, so it suits a wide range of fitness levels, and it's the ideal setup if you're based in Nelson, Motueka or Kaiteriteri and allergic to carrying a heavy pack.

"We did the morning scenic cruise, beautiful surroundings, and a few fur seals to be found. Were dropped off on what felt like our very own deserted beach for a couple of hours, with the option of a couple of walks, or just taking in the sun."

"We went to Totaranui and return. The highlight was seeing a Pod of Dolphins. The commentary both was really good on both journeys."
